Harriet Quimby was the first woman in the United States to be issued a pilot’s license. She was the first woman to fly a monoplane alone across the English Channel. She died on July 1, 1912 during a flying exhibition in Boston, when she fell out of her plane (yes, this is a true story), thus proving forevermore that women should never be allowed to operate any machine that moves faster than a brisk walk.
